Former World No. 1 Serena Williams is currently in her 28th season having turned Pro in 1994. Winner of 23 singles Grand Slam titles, Williams is regarded as one of the greatest tennis players ever to grace the court given her massive trophy cabinet that is the justification for her prowess as a legend of the sport.

While her on-court achievements have been untouched for a long time and might remain so going ahead as well, she has been often involved in various controversies and fights with her opponents, chair umpire and tournament officials. Williams has been a candid player and has never shied away from calling out officials and her colleagues when she has had a difference of opinion or felt like taking a dig at the person.

“If she wants to be with the guy with a black heart, go for it”: Serena Williams on Maria Sharapova

5-time Grand Slam champion and former World No. 1 Maria Sharapova had been one of the fiercest rivals of Serena prior to her retirement. Their most famous meeting remains the 2004 Wimbledon finals when a teen Maria surprised the whole tennis community by defeating the title favourite and 2-time defending champion Serena. Since then, the two remained at loggerheads for majority of their career before Maria stepped away from the game.

While Maria’s relationship with Grigor Dimitrov is widely known, Serena and Grigor were also reportedly dating for a brief period of time but the two never made their relationship public. However, Serena was upset when Grigor and Maria were together and her leaked conversation with sister Venus Williams added more element to the speculation of Serena’s disliking of Maria.

“There are people who live, breathe and dress tennis. I mean, seriously, give it a rest. She begins every interview with ‘I’m so happy. I’m so lucky’—it’s so boring. She’s still not going to be invited to the cool parties. And, hey, if she wants to be with the guy with a black heart, go for it,” said Serena to her sister Venus in a leaked telephonic conversation where despite not taking Sharapova’s name, it was fairly certain that the American was taking a dig at one of her least favourite rival who was then dating Dimitrov, believed ex-boyfriend of Serena.
