Following an overnight computer outage at the Federal Aviation Administration, airports nationwide are gradually resuming normal operations Wednesday morning.

"All flights currently in the sky are safe to land," the FAA tweeted in an update. "Pilots check the NOTAM system before they fly. A Notice to Air Missions alerts pilots about closed runways, equipment outages, and other potential hazards along a flight route or at a location that could affect the flight.

Kalamazoo/Battle Creek Assistant Director of Operations Maintenance Anton Bjorkman, who has worked in the industry for eight years, said he's never seen anything like this outage happen, but said it is usually related to what is considered typical maintenance to any software system.

As of 8:54 a.m., the safety system affected by the outage was fully restored, and the nationwide ground stop was lifted, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg said in a tweet.

Buttigieg said he's working to determine the cause of the outage and recommend next steps.
